St. Brigid's crosses are associated with Brigid of Kildare, is an Irish symbol and is actually a Christian symbol, it possibly derives from the pagan sunwheel and is usually made from rushes or, less often, straw and is a woven square in the centre and four radials tied at the ends. It was traditionally believed that a Brigid's Cross protects the house from fire, evil and hunger from the homes in which it is displayed that is why it is hung in many Irish and Irish-American kitchens for this purpose. To celebrate her life there is a feast that takes place on the 1st of February, the day on which she died in 524 A.D. Her body lies at Downpatrick beside the graves of St. Patrick and St. Columba.

Brigid, "Mary of the Gael", abbess and patroness of Ireland, and founder of the first Irish monastery in Kildare, is known for her unbounded charity that drew multitudes of the poor to her door including an old pagan chieftain and a stubborn disbeliever. Brigid sat down at his bedside and began consoling him as he lay dying. As was customary, the dirt floor was strewn with rushes both for warmth and cleanliness, Brigid stooped down and started to weave them into a cross, fastening the points together. The sick man asked what she was doing. She began to explain the cross, and as she talked, his delirium quieted and he questioned her with growing interest. Through her weaving, he converted and was baptized just before his death. Since then, the cross of rushes has existed in Ireland.
